Landless demonstrate in front of CM's residence

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 25: Activists of the Bhumi Adhikar Sangram Samiti (BASS) today demonstrated in front of the official residence of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at Khapara in Guwahati in protest against his failure to provide land to 25 lakh local landless families. On October 30, 2013 Gogoi had assured the landless people of the state at the State Land Convention that the government would provide lands to the landless families, but not a single of such families got land even today.

The police, on the other hand, resisted the demonstrators and that led to a scuffle. At 1.30 pm, the protestors blocked the tiol Highway and that led DCP Hemanta Kumar Das to invite two representatives of the protestors to have discussion with the administration. The protestors, however, rejected the invitation outright. The DCP then asked the protestors to vacate the road within five minutes, and the protestors did so but not before shouting slogans like 'Tarun Gogoi nipat jauk'. It may be mentioned here that the Chief Minister is on Australia tour now.
