Landslide fear haunts villagers at Jorabat

DIMORIA, April 21: The residents of the Jorabat area are worried with rains lashing the State much earlier this year. They are apprehensive of an impending disaster near landslide-prone Ghanashyam Basti in the area.

Ghanashyam Basti near Jorabat is located on a high ground, and a hill near the village is quite prone to landslides. With no guard wall erected there, locals have been witnessing landslides even in the dry season at the village. It is apprehended that the natual disaster may go the worst during the monsoon.  

Following the conversion of NH-37 into a four-lane one, right from Khanapara to Sonapur, the residents in this stretch have been facing artificial floods and landslide every year. Allegedly, due to unscientific method practiced by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) while constructing the highway, more particularly in the Jorabat stretch, the local residents have been experiencing artificial floods in the first shower of the summer. As the hindrance is prevailing for years, the natives are going through a great deal of anxiety anticipating the same ordeal in this year too. The people of Jorabat demanded the district administration, line departments and the NHAI to initiate precautionary measures at the earliest to avoid untoward incidents in the coming season.
