Landslides affect many city areas

GUWAHATI, June 13: Wrath of the Rain God has affected Guwahatians in many ways through inundation of streets, plaguing the traffic system, landslide and what not.

Landslide is an age-old and perennial companion to rains in Guwahati. This is an unwanted gift for Guwahatians from the unplanned settlement and development of the city. The incessant rains that have been lashing the city since June 11 have led to landslides in many areas. Though there is no report of any loss of life, the situation may aggravate if the rain does not stop.

As of now reports of landslides have been received from Uzan Bazar, Gandhi Mandap, Nilachal Hill, Bonda, Hengrabari, Nijarapara, Chandmari etc, in the city. The loss of property has not been estimated as yet. Kamrup (M) DC M Angamuthu has visited the landslide-affected areas and taken stock of the situation. He has also asked the ADC, circle officers ad DDMs to take stock of situation in their respective areas. He has also asked the NDRF, Health Department, PHE Department, Water Resources Department, Forest Department, GDD, APDCL and others to be on alert to meet any eventuality. The administration has requested the affected people to contact 1077, 0361-2733352 of Kamrup(M) DC control room, 100 of police control room and common number 108.    

Taking the gravity of the threat from landslide, Kamrup (M) district administration has issued an advisory to people residing in landslide-prone areas to shift to safer places.

As of now, the SDRF personnel are on the job of extending support to the affected people.
