GUWAHATI, March 7: A lecture and discussion programme was held at Cotton College on “Bharatmuni’s Theory of Rasa as a Cross Cultural Upsurgence of Aesthetic Appreciation” today.  The lecture was delivered by the former Head and Professor of Pune University (PU), SC Vhelke at Sudmerson Hall of the college, a press release said.

Prof. Vhelke said: “When we get something, we don’t feel the real happiness (pleasure), but when we give away or dedicate something then only we enjoy the actual happiness. The actual meaning of bliss or happiness lies in dedication, not in the enjoyment of the tural things. The main aim of our life is “Bisranti” (being rest). It is such type of stage where the special form of the spiritual development of human life is realized. To achieve that ‘Bisranti’ we need ‘tapasya’. ‘Tapasya’ is the state of dedication for any action or interest to do hard labour.”

He mentioned also that the realization of the happiness is found in the inter-connection of the different culture of different society.

After the lecture replying to the thoughtful questions of the students and teachers, Prof. Vhelke said: “The discussion of dramas in today’s materialistic and mechanical life plays an important role. To get spiritual and aesthetic feelings from the tiny works of our life, we need to discuss, inculcate and observe the different aspects of drama.”

The coorditor of the programme was Prof. Jagadish Patgiri, who gave a detailed account on the importance of drama (tya-Sastra) of Bharatmuni in the development of the performing arts of in Northeast India.
