Life at stake at level-crossing

BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Oct 29: The railway unmanned level-crossing near Chandmari in Guwahati is now regularly being used as a road. Vendors have erected some structures for selling near the railway line, posing a threat to human life.

Speaking to this reporter, Monikut Saikia, a vendor, said, “This is a regular scene. This railway line serves as a shortcut road for people to go to  Rajgarh from  Chandmari as it is an unmanned level-crossing.” “Accidents keep happening here. The last accident that happened here was just six months ago. But people still put their life at stake by crossing the railway line while the trains are the most near,” Saikia added.

Saikia also said that recently many vendors illegally settled next to the railway line.  Sukanya Das, a passer-by crossing the railway line, said, “We’ve been doing this since years.  Everyday while coming to school we take this route through this railway line. Whenever we see the train coming we run faster to cross it. At times it is life threatening.”
