Massive security blanket during FIFA & T20 matches: City Police

 BY OUR STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Sept 25: The Assam Police is working overtime to ensure foolproof security to players and spectators during the two high-voltage intertiol sports events—FIFA U-17 World Cup India, 2017 and India-Australia T20 cricket match – slated for October in Guwahati.
Sources told The Sentinel that security would be a major issue during the two sports events and under no circumstances the police would compromise anything in the matter of providing foolproof security at the sports venues and other locations including the two five-star hotels where players and officials would stay.
“The City Police has already started working to chalk out a comprehensive security blueprint. There’ll be a three-layer security blanket in and around the sports venues, players and other officials (visiting the city in connection with the sports events). Even though the Assam Police has the experience of providing foolproof security during intertiol cricket matches held in the city previously, security concerns for the FIFA World Cup is high since it’s being held in the city for the first time. Moreover, security protocols for the FIFA matches will be more than that of T20 cricket match,” a source said.
While the FIFA World Cup matches will be held at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium at Sarusojai from October 8 to 25, 2017, the T20 cricket match will be held at the newly-built cricket stadium at Barsapara on October 10, 2017. Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium at Sarusojai has 30,000-seat capacity, and the cricket stadium at Barsapara can accommodate over 37,000 onlookers.
Players and officials associated with both the sports events will be staying at Vivanta by Taj and Radisson Blue Hotels. Besides normal hotel security, the City Police will make its own security arrangements in the two five-star hotels. Several gazetted officers of the Assam Government will be in-charge of overall arrangements, including security at hotels.
The police started installing 135 CCTVs at Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium at Sarusajai. The police will closely monitor all activities at the stadium on a 24x7 basis from its control room during the days of FIFA matches. One Drone camera has already put into service at the stadium for close vigil. Plan is afoot to install another Drone at the stadium.
Sources said considering the fact that Guwahati is hoisting another intertiol cricket match after a gap of seven years and excitement associated with T20 the police will not take any risk in security arrangement for the October 10 match. Additiol DGP (Security) Harmit Singh and Police Commissioner of Guwahati Hiren th on Sunday visited the Cricket Stadium at Barsapara to take stock of security.
th told The Sentinel that considering the prestige and importance associated with the coming sports events the police will be very strict and in no way lenient in the matter of security. He said to avoid any untoward incident during the football and cricket matches in the city the people need to cooperate with the police.
“We have already sought additiol forces for the Durga Puja. More forces will be required for the two sports events to be held after the puja,” th said.
