Me-Dam-Me-Phi observed


GUWAHATI, Jan 31: Me-Dam-Me-Phi, the most sacred ritual of the Ahom community, was observed today in Guwhati along with the rest of the State.

Functions on a grand scale were held at several places, including Guwahati, to celebrate the occasion.

The Ahoms, who ruled the state for about 600 years since 1228, observe the festival on January 31 every year and the community gets together in different localities and areas to pay their respect to their ancestors and their contribution to society.

Annually, this ritual is observed to seek blessings of the ancestors and to honour their souls. The community believes that if the ritual is not observed, it will invite the wrath of the forefathers and there will be crisis on earth.

In Guwahati, the festival was centrally celebrated at Notboma by the Brihattar Guwahati Kendriya Me-Dam-Me-Phi Udjapan Samiti.

Former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and State Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also took part in the celebration here and offered maidam tarpan on the occasion. Former Chief Minister Gogoi and Education minister Sarma was seen together today in a public function after a long gap.  Gogoi also iugurated a guest house newly constructed by Tai Ahom Cultural Society. The Me-Dam-Me-Phi was also observed at 4th APBN headquarter at Kahilipara in the city.
