Guwahati, Aug 29: The traditiol Assamese outfit – Mekhela Chador – was an all-out success at the Lakme Fashion Week winter festive 2016 held at Mumbai on Sunday evening.
The audiences were left captivated when the sizzling Bipasha Basu walked the ramp as the showstopper for Sanjukta Dutta – a designer of repute from Assam – wearing a Mekhela Chador.
With Bipasha walking in exquisite Mekhela Chador, the collection replete with both traditiol and contemporary motif’s and draping styles was designed by Sanjukta to present, to the country the true face of today’s Assam.
“The collection was designed to showcase the true essence of today’s Assam; a perfect blend of tural Beauty, Tranquility and Commul Harmony,” Sanjukta said in a statement released to the media on Monday.
She further stated that she wanted to establish Mekhela Chador as a designer wear. “Mekhela-chadors while well known in the North East have not been able to establish itself elsewhere, especially not as a designer wear. My attempt is to change its overall image as well as showcase the convenience and beauty attached to a Mekhela Chador. With the new design sensibilities, I have kept several motifs that are seen on traditiol textiles of the Northeast intact as they are beautiful and hold symbolic meaning,” the statement read.
Sanjukta, who quit a government job in order to pursue her passion for design, is making waves across the fashion industry by showcasing her collection of fashioble and exquisite range of completely customized and hand-crafted Assamese Mekhla Chadors at various tiol events. She recently showed her collection at the India Beach Fashion Week held in Goa where Bollywood star Zarine Khan wore the showstopper of her collection.
“Over the last couple of years the outside world has come to know Assam as an area of strife, a direct reflection of which is seen through our tourism numbers and tiol media coverage. This has pained me immensely because the Assam I know and we all know is not like that. Thus, I decided to use this opportunity provided by Lakme Fashion Week to showcase the real Assam of true tural beauty, tranquility, commul harmony and rich culture through my collection,” Sanjukta added.
