GUWAHATI, Dec 17: Former three-time Congress MLA Membor Gogoi passed away yesterday.

Gogoi did not contest the 2016 elections due to ill-health and his daughter-in-law contested as Congress candidate from Teok constituency but she lost the polls.

Membor Gogoi died following old-age ailments in Jorhat town, family sources said. He was 79 and is survived by three sons. His wife, Aimoni Gogoi, who was a famed Bihu dancer and sister of former Chief Minister late Hiteswar Saikia, had predeceased him. Gogoi was elected to the Assam Legislative Assembly for three consecutive terms since 2001 from Teok constituency.

Former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi condoled the death of the senior Congress leader saying that the party has lost a sincere, honest and hardworking member who tried to uplift the condition of the poor and the backward people.
