GUWAHATI, Sept 5: The Arannya Suraksha Samiti, Assam (ASSA) has submitted a memorandum to President of India Prab Mukherjee recently to stop the mega river dam of Bhutan.

ASSA secretary Haricharan Das said today in a statement: "The river dams in Bhutan Patsangshu I, Patsangshu II, Khulungshu, Wangshu, Nikashu and others create devastating floods in lower Assam. Meanwhile, Bhutan is also going to construct more river dams like Bukha, Amashu, Samkharsu, Kurigunguri and Sonkosh river dams which will be among the world’s five tallest river dams with 10,000 MW capacities. They will be threats to the ecological and biodiversity balance of the North East and West Bengal. The dams would also create the scarcity of water and tural calamities like sudden floods, earthquake etc. We, therefore, request the President to raise a strong voice to stop the dams in the Himalayan tion.”
