Modi government has its focus on NE: Sonowal

GUWAHATI, June 3: Union Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs (independent charge) Sarbanda Sonowal said the rendra Modi-led BJP government at the Centre has been focusing on the development of the Northeast right from its first year in office.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati today, Sonowal said: "The Centre has allocated Rs 53,000 crore for the Northeast in its first Budget. This speaks volumes of the NDA government's commitment for the commitment of the Northeast."

The special allocation of Rs 28,000 crore for improving railway connectivity in the region and the Prime Minister's dream of developing the region as an organic hub are enough to prove that the Centre is committed to develop the Northeast. "Frequent visits to the Northeast by Union ministers have helped them understand the problems afflicting the region and the boons that the region has," he added.

The Union Minister said that the hosting of the tiol Youth Festival in Guwahati in January this year and Northeast Youth Festival at Majuli last month as achievements of his ministry.  He also said that the awarding of SAF Games jointly to Assam and Meghalaya in November this year is also a positive development for the region.
