GUWAHATI, Oct 21: Two indigenous Muslims bodies of Assam have said that there is nothing to panic on the issue of ‘origil inhabitants (OI)’ in the process of NRC update since NRC is going to treat all citizens having their legacy data prior to March 25, 1971 as Indians. Addressing the press in Guwahati on Saturday, Asomiya Muslim Kalyan Parishad (AMKP) and Sadou Asom Goriya

Yuba Parishad (SAGYP) said: “We welcome the move for publication of the draft NRC by December 31 this year. We find no reason to shed tears by the Muslims of Assam for Bangladeshis getting no berth in the NRC in the interest of jaati, maati and bheti. NRC is not going to decide dual citizenship, nor will it categorize citizens as Goriyas, Moriyas, Karbis, Boros, Kacharis, Dimasas and the like. It’s only going to ensure citizenship. It’s just recognition from the Government of India to its illegal citizens in Assam. There’s no reason to panic on the issue of citizenship. Some vested interests have been out to create panic people on NRC update and ‘OI’ tag.”
