New IPR policy in GU soon

GUWAHATI, March 24: The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) cell of Gauhati University is to form a new IPR policy for its students and research scholars very soon.
Speaking at the valedictory session of the two-day regiol workshop on Intellectual Property Rights at Gauhati University on Saturday, Prof. Pradeep Phukan, Coorditor of GU IPR cell, stressed the need for proper procedure of filing applications for the grant of patents to the inventor or the innovator of Gauhati University.
The workshop was jointly organized by GU IPR cell and Patent Information Centre, Assam Science Technology and Environment Council (ASTEC), Guwahati with an objective to create awareness on IPR in the Northeast and sensitize the participants about IPR, right from the basics.
Prof. Phukan said: "We're still at capacity-building stage on the issue of IPR. As there arises a question of ownership whether the inventor or the applicant should give the right to file an application of grant of patent to the authority of GU, a separate IPR policy formation in that case is an urgent need at GU".
"Despite looking for the policy on IPR from the State Government, the ASTEC is also one such Council that can encourage the inventors, especially in the grassroots level, to file applications of grant of patent for their inventions. The ASTEC can bear the charge of at least 5 patentee annually to relief patentee who generally sideline themselves for fincial strain in applying for patent," said Phukan.
