NGO raps Dispur on rhino poaching

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 13: As many as 150 rhinos fell prey to the bullets of poachers since 2012 in the State, claimed the Kaziranga Wildlife Society, an NGO, at a press meet in Guwahati Press Club today. The Society condemned the State Forest Department for its failure to protect wildlife, especially Kaziranga rhinos.

The Society said: “There had been a fall in the killing of wildlife after an intelligence cell was put in place a few years back. The cell did expose the involvement of a few forest personnel in poaching. However, for reasons best known to the Government, the cell was removed due to political pressure. We demand of the Chief Minister, who himself is the Chairman of the State Wildlife Advisory board, to reintroduce the intelligence cell if he is really interested to arrest the rampant killing of rhinos in the State.”
