NGO to distribute sanitary pkins free of cost

GUWAHATI, Jan 21: Women’s health and hygiene is something up for promotion in society these days. This reality has many takers now. NEEDS, an NGO based in Guwahati, is such a taker. Hope not, the tempo dies down before achieving the target.

NEEDS has stepped into the job for distributing sanitary pkins free-of-cost among poor women in rural areas where such pkins are not in use, maybe because of poverty or lack of awareness. They use various methods to get rid of the problem when they are in periods. Such materials may be dirty clothes that are vulnerable for infection.

Dr. Moushumee Das, who is associated with NEEDS, said: “We’ve taken the programme at as many as ten places this year. Startling it may sound but it’s a reality that only 18 per cent of women in Assam use sanitary pkins. This statistics speaks volumes of awareness on sanitary pkins in the State. We need to make women aware of the health hazards from unhygienic materials that may spell doom for them. On January 24, we’re going to distribute sanitary pkins to 1,000 women at a village in Bongaigaon district.”
