NH-37 blockade makes people stuck in traffic

'It's local MLA Akon Bora who has driven wedge among the organizations in the Dimoria area, leading to opposition by a section of  Armi-Karbis in the area to the holding of TAC elections in Dimoria' - 26 organizations including AASU, KSU and ABSU

From our Correspondent

DIMORIA, July 6: 'Akon Bora murdabad' and 'Tarun Gogoi murdabad' rent the air along the NH 37 at Jorabat and many other places today when around 2,000 members of the Karbi Students' Union (KSU), Tiwa Students' Union (TAC), All Bodo Students' Union (ABSU) and 23 other organizations of the state blocked it for an hour. The blockade led to traffic jams along the highway.

The blockade was called against the State Election Commission's (SEC) decision of not holding elections in the six Tiwa Autonomous Council (TAC) constituencies in and around Dimoria. The six constituencies are 26-Dimoria, 32-Digaru, 33-Khetri, 34-Sopur, 35-Ampri and 36-Fongari. The SEC, according to the 26 organizations, has succumbed to the pressure of a few organizations belonging to the Amri-Karbis. The tiol highway was blocked at Jorabat from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm, leading to a massive traffic jam. The police had to stop vehicles plying on NH-37 at various places. The blockade was withdrawn only when Sopur Revenue Circle Officer  went to the spot and assured the protestors of sending their memorandum to the higher-ups. The memorandum was submitted by all the 26 organizations.

The 26 organizations, however, blamed it on local MLA Akon Bora for the SEC not holding elections to the six TAC constituencies in the Dimoria area. "It's local MLA Akon Bora who has driven wedge among the organizations in the Dimoria area, leading to the opposition by a section of Armi-Karbis in the area to the holding of TAC elections in Dimoria," leaders of the 26 organizations alleged.

Meanwhile, the KSU said: "If Dispur does not take any tangible steps to hold TAC elections in the Dimoria area soon, on July 13 we'll resort to a nude protest".
