No-holds-barred comments in social media: CLP moves CID

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, June 9: State CLP leader Debabrata Saikia has met the CID ADG with a team of party MLAs on the issue of no-holds-barred statements being made in the social media.

Meeting the ADG today, Saikia said: “A section of people makes comments in social media, no-holds-barred. They attack everyone they want, including politicians, religious leaders and others. A person, Debojit Roy, who has an account in the Facebook under the head ‘Vox Populi’, made some immodest and derogatory comments against Srimanta Sankardeva, a me every Assamese is proud of. We want immediate arrest of Debojit Roy so as to let others treading the same path know the consequence of making irresponsible comments. We’ve been observing that a section of people has been misusing social media to defame and malign images of people by making derogatory comments. They even don’t spare women to defame. Our party did lodge a complaint against people making such irresponsible comments in social media. However, the government hasn’t been strict against cyber crimils. The slackness on the part of the government, we feel, encourages people engaged in such crimes.”

Others present along with Saikia were MLAs Abdul Khaleque, Wazed Ali Choudhury, Zakir Hussain and ndidata Das.

The crux of the problems is the fact that the gate-keeping mechanism prevalent in print and electronic media is totally absent in social media.
