No leniency in NRC update: Sonowal

GUWAHATI, Jan 11: Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal today said that no leniency from officers of any rank will be tolerated in the NRC update process and asked the DCs to immediately remove employees who are seen to be casual in their job.

Speaking at the Deputy Commissioners’ Conference held today at Assam Administrative Staff College, Khapara, Sonowal said that Assam being the first State in the country to implement the NRC update exercise, the Deputy Commissioners must maintain utmost care to ensure error-free verification of documents. The Chief Minister directed the DCs to review the NRC update process every week for minimum two hours stating that people of Assam have high hopes from this exercise.

The Chief Minister has further made a call to the Deputy Commissioners to work harder and exert extreme responsibility as leaders and motive the down-line officers and employees to ensure effective and timely implementation of all government programmes. He asked the DCs to remain alert and proactive and build a congenial environment taking all communities into confidence for charting a new era of development in the State.

Reiterating government commitment for providing land patta to 30,000 landless indigenous people of the State, Sonowal asked the DCs to immediately conduct survey to identify the background of the encroachers and carry out eviction drive with caution.

Stating that the Government of Assam is actively working on a project called “Discovery of Assam”, the Chief Minister further directed the DCs to tap the resources available in their respective districts including human, tural, cultural and communication etc.

The Chief Minister also asked the DCs to identify the issues and concerns which create law and order situation in the district and submit report to the government highlighting the aspirations of specific communities with suggestions for different programmes for fulfilling the same. Govt. will include such innovative programmes in the forthcoming budget, the Chief Minister added.

Sonowal further stated that the Govt. is working for inclusive development and it is the responsibility of the Deputy Commissioners to ensure that all schemes implemented in their district must encompass all and reaches to all.

The Chief Minister also asked the DCs to bring about a reform in the Social Welfare Department stating that department has received a beating in recent times due to mismagement and lack of motivation of the employees. He also directed the DCs to conduct motivatiol workshop with all functiories of the Social Welfare Department to boost up the morale for a reformative change.

Sonowal also asked the DCs to strictly monitor the repairing of roads and embankments on a priority basis for expeditious implementing. He also urged them to devise a mechanism to ensure completion of construction of over three lakh houses under Prime Minister’s Awas Yoja in the state.

 Further appreciating the active role played by the Deputy Commissioners for successfully holding the 3-day Independence Day celebration in the State, the Chief Minister directed the DCs to ensure the forthcoming Republic Day more inclusive. Sonowal asked the DCs to ensure participation of all communities in the celebration of Republic Day and directed to hold a symposium on “Role of citizens in the update of NRC in Assam” on 25th January, 2017 in every district.

            The Chief Minister also highlighted the basic features of the proposed Festival of Faith to be held in the State from 31st March to 4th April, 2017 and asked the DCs to make elaborate plan to regain peoples’ faith on the potentiality of the Brahmaputra through this festival.
