NRC update can't make Assam free from aliens: ASM

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Sept 14: The Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha (ASM) today said that the NRC update would not make Assam free from foreigners.

In a statement issued to the press, ASM said: “The government’s assurance that an updated NRC will make Assam free from foreigners is not true. From 1951 to 1971 around 70 lakh foreigners have entered Assam from the then East Pakistan and the neighbouring countries, and they have done everything to get their mes figured in the NRC to be updated. Thus Assam can never be free from foreigners. An updated NRC will only be a document to destruct the indigenous people of the State. We’ll never accept the NRC. We’ve been carrying out a drive to bring about awareness among the local people since 2007 with scant response from the indigenous people of the State. A section of anti-tiol people took that advantage and got the better of updating the NRC for which the local people will have to bear the brunt in future.”
