GUWAHATI, Nov 21: Who is going to head the BJP Assam Pradesh? This is still a question even for the top State leaders of the party, let alone the public! The issue is becoming more and more complicated with every passing day. This is because this question has much to do with another question – who will be the Assam Assembly Speaker?

The mes of many State leaders were proposed before the party high command which refused most of the mes outright. The party in the State now has an in-charge president – Santanu Bharali. His candidature was also among the probable candidates but that proposition was rejected by the high command that wants Assam Assembly Speaker Ranjt Dass to head the party in the State. Dass’ response to the offer is also a mixed one. His statement ‘I’ll accept whatever the party high command asks me to shoulder’ does not have the ‘will’ factor in it. It seems that he is reluctant to take the hot post and that he is comfortable with what he is holding now.

There are other problems as well. In the event of Dass becoming the party president, who will be the Speaker? The me of East Guwahati MLA Siddahrtha Bhattacharjee was raised. However, the MLA, according to party sources, is not keen to be the Speaker. Then the me of MLA Hitendrath Goswami came out. However, differences of opinion on his candidature have cropped up in the party in the State.

According to sources, the party high command is likely to me the State party president by November-end. With Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal leaving for New Delhi today for other programmes, the issue of party president may come up for discussion.

The delay in ming the new president of the party in the State has created a lot of problems of the party that is yet to form a number of its morchas. A sense of resentment in the party is brewing up slowly but certainly. Even though five months have already elapsed after Sarbanda Sonowal becoming the Chief Minister, he is still not in a position to expand his Cabinet. This indecisiveness leads to problems like failure on the part of the government to make political appointments in various boards and councils, including development councils. The party leaders in the State are the ones who will head such boards, PSUs and development councils. The party has so far failed to rehabilitate its leaders. The non-happening of the Cabinet expansion has stalled everything. Amidst the directive from the party high command how Sonowal is going to solve the problem is his real acid test.
