GUWAHATI, Sept 23:  As many as 10, 000 LED street lights have been installed so far in Guwahati city under ‘Project Jyoti’, a scheme launched by Guwahati Municipal Project (GMC) last year.

Simco Telecommunications, a Kolkata based farm, has implemented the project.     “We have so far installed around 10,000 LED street lights in the city. The residents of Guwahtai have gleefully applied for these. There are around 5000 such applications pending. We will be happy to continue our work to light up the city,” Salil Chaudhury, executive director of the implementing farm told reporters on Friday. The street lights are of 16 watt and are mounted on a five metre pole. The applicants need to pay a one-time fee of Rs 100 per application and monthly expenses of around Rs 30. The GMC under ‘Project Jyoti’ has so far spent Rs 9 crore out of Rs 23 crore, incurred for the project. Newly joined GMC Commissioner Sanjib Gohain Baruah said that he would take a decision after going through the current status of the project. “It’s definitely a huge project. We will take a decision after going through the detail of the current status,” Gohain said.
