By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, March 10: This is raising the alarm! On an average over three vehicles are stolen from Guwahati daily, the highest in the State. The number of vehicles in Guwahati is increasing every day, so is the number of vehicle theft. The recovery rate, however, almost nil. Who can sound the right alarm to keep car thefts in the city at bay?

As many as 1,175 vehicles were stolen from the city in 2016. Of them only 108 vehicles could be recovered. In 2015 as many as 1,233 vehicles were stolen in the city, and of them only 155 vehicles could be recovered.  The number of vehicles stolen in 2014 was 1426, and only 101 of them could be recovered. The number of vehicles stolen in 2013 was 1092, and only 100 of them could be recovered. In 2012 as many as 1023 vehicles were stolen, and 117 of them were recovered. In 2011 as many as 1045 vehicles were stolen and 106 of them could be recovered.

Guwahati city is in front of all other districts of the State for a wrong reason. The number of cases of vehicle theft is much less in other districts in the State. Of course, this is also a fact that the number of vehicles bought is much less in other districts in the State than what it is in Guwahati.

In 2011 as many as 2,789 vehicles were stolen in the State, and only 295 of them were recovered. In 2012 the number of vehicles stolen in the State was 3,073 with the recovery of 377. In 2013 as many as many as 3,756 vehicles were stolen and only 391 of them were recovered. In 2014 as many as 4,154 vehicles were stolen, and 344 of them were recovered in the State.  The number of vehicles stolen in 2015 was 4031 and that of recovery was 541 in the State. In 2016 the number of vehicles stolen in the State was 4300 and that of recovery was just 512.
