GUWAHATI, April 6: The Foundation Day Lecture of Physics Academy of North-East (PANE) was held in Gauhati University today. The lecture was delivered by Prof. YP Viyogi, DAE Raja Raman fellow, and former Director, Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar on 'Big Science and small groups'.
Prof. Viyogi discussed how large number of scientists from different countries across the globe are working in a collaborative way in mega- facilities LHC, FAIR, INO etc. "The domain of science in the present-day world is very big and it is fasciting to see how small groups all across the world are working in these mega-science facilities very successfully," he said, and mentioned several research institutions and universities across India including Gauhati University that have successfully been a part of such mega-projects. He also elaborated in details about the INO project of India, which has been set up in Tamil du to study various properties of the miniature particle neutrino with the help of large number of Indian Physicists.
There was a lively interactive session after the talk with the audience. The audience included PANE life members, invited guests, faculty members of various institutions including Gauhati University, research scholars, students and others.
Earlier, Prof. A Gohainbaruah, HOD, Physics of Gauhati University, gave the welcome address. Prof. Kalyani Barua, the working President of PANE, in her lecture stressed the increasing activities of PANE at the grassroots level.
