Parties for three-phase panchayat poll

GUWAHATI, Dec 5: The major political parties in Assam want a three-phase panchayat poll in the State. The AIUDF, on the other hand, wants deferment of the poll in view of NRC update. State Election Commissioner (SEC) HN Bora held a meeting with leaders of various political parties of the State seeking their views on the panchayat poll slated for 2018. Earlier, the SEC said that it wanted to complete the entire poll process by mid-February, 2018. At today’s meeting, while the BJP, Congress and the AGP wanted the panchayat poll to be a three-phase affair, the AIUDF wanted the poll to be deferred in view of NRC update.
