Plant trees on World Environment Day: CM

GUWAHATI, June 3: Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal today called on the people of the state to plant a tree each on this World Environment Day which is celebrated on June 5 every year. Urging the people to extend their whole-hearted cooperation to achieve the goal of a pollution free state, the Chief Minister said today in press release that each individual citizen must take responsibility of planting trees and looking after those plants so that the green cover of the state can be increased and effect of deforestation can be negated.  It is to be mentioned that the theme of this year’s World Environment Day is “Connecting People to ture” which seeks to make people aware about various challenges to ture and utmost urgency that the world needs to show in preserving the ecology and environment for a sustaible future of planet earth.  The Chief Minister also said that the government is committed to reduce the pressure on the environment and preserve the forest cover of the state so that a pollution free environment can be ensured for the future generations. Activities such as illegal felling of trees in the forest reserves and harming the flora and fau disturbing ecological balance have been effectively checked by the government and stringent actions would be taken against wrong doers, he said. Stressing the importance of people taking ownership of the initiatives for saving the environment from degradation for these actions to become successful, the Chief Minister, through one of his reach-out programmes, appealed to the people of the state to plant at least one sapling on the World Environment Day and nurture till it matures.
