Police Accountability Commission disposes of 511 cases

Commission asked departmental action against 153 and filing of crimil cases against 30 others

GUWAHATI, July 20: The State Police Accountability Commission (SPAC), Assam has disposed off as many as 511 cases against police personnel after investigation from 2008 till June 2016.

According to sources, in many of the 511 disposed cases accountability has been fixed against many top-level police officials who had to face punitive action. In 153 cases, the Commission asked the department to take action against them, and in 30 other cases the Commission asked the government and top-level police officials to file crimil cases against them, the Commission said in a press release.

140 cases were filed by women and the Commission disposed of 134 cases of them. The Commission had been set up in accordance with the Assam Police Act, 2007. It has three members, besides a retired judge as the Chairperson. This commission can direct investigation in accordance with Section 78 of the Assam Police Act, 2007 when there is serious misconduct like custodial death; severe injury; rape, attempt to rape or violating modesty of women; illegal arrest or confinement; forceful deprivation of people from their property; victims of conspiracies or extortion and not filing FIR.

The Commission said that it had conducted awareness meetings in different parts in the State. It hoped that in the days ahead the police would do their duty with social accountability.
