Police-oil tanker driver clash leads to firing

GUWAHATI, August 23: A fracas between IOC oil tanker drivers and police personnel at Betkuchi in the city led to the injury of a police driver and an ASI today. The police resorted to fire a round in the air to bring the situation under control.

The incident, according to sources, started when a traffic police personnel demanded cash from an oil tanker driver. With the driver refusing to pay the cash, the traffic personnel had to beat him up, sources alleged. However, the handyman of the tanker soon rushed to the Asom Petrol Mazdoor Union office located nearby and informed them of the incident. The irate members of the Union soon came to the NH and blocked it. With the situation being tense, a team of police personnel from ISBT outpost rushed to the spot and that led the protestors pelting stones at the police vehicle, injuring a driver Nijamuddin Ahmed and ASI Surya Kumar Das. The police had to fire a round in the air to bring the situation under control.
