Postal boxes on the wane

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, February 18: The attachment towards the letter boxes of the post office has lost its sheen. The emotion that was attached before with sending and receiving of letters has lost its earlier affection among the public.

The Department of the Post, therefore, has decided to remove the unused letter boxes, barring a few that have been erected at some important places. GPO sources said that as the letter boxes that were vastly used earlier by the public for persol relations and for sending information from one place to another are now neglected due to improved means of communication like mobile and internet.  They also said that now the letter boxes would be kept only near the post offices and at important places for their use. The department is planning for some steps to be taken to popularize the use of business related letters through the Postal Department.

Over 89 per cent of the 1,54,856 post offices in the country are in the rural areas. The department has around 4.66 lakh employees.

Even them, the use of postal services cannot be ignored totally. The post offices still render valuable services through their speed post articles, postal life insurance policies, and business related articles. The department handle over 605 crore mail articles, 17 crore registered articles, 36 crore speed post articles a year.
