GUWAHATI, Dec 27: Noted Kamrupi folk singer Snehalata Das was given away the prestigious Pratima Pandey Baruah Memorial Award, 2015 at a function at Padmashree Pratima Pandey Baruah park at Chandmari in Guwahati today.

The award was given away by All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) adviser Samujjal Bhattacharyya, president Dipanko Kumar th and general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi. The award carries a gamosa, an endi chador, a xorai, a citation and Rs 25,000 in cash.

Receiving the award, Das said that she would work hard to the keep the creative works of Padmashree Pratima Pandey Baruah alive so as to make them available for the posterity. She said that she was happy to receive the award. She thanked the AASU for giving her the award.

Speaking on the occasion, Samujjal Bhattacharyya said: “There should have been enough scopes for study and research on the contribution of Jyotiprasad Agarwala, Bishnu Rabha, Parvati Prasad Baruah, Prani Sarma, Bhupen Hazarika, Pratima Pandey Baruah, Rameswar Pathak and others in the universities located in the State. However, funds are the prerequisite for such a move. Dispur continues to fall short of doing enough to make that happen by extending funds to the universities.” The AASU adviser further said: “If we’re to preserve the creative works of Pratima Pandey Baruah, the government has to come forward to preserve her residence at Gauripur as a museum or an archive. If Dispur can’t do all such works which it should have done, it should surrender. We the people of the State can do them.”

Mr Ganga Shankar Pandey, husband of Pratima Pandey Baruah, also spoke on the need of preservation of the house of the folk singer at Gauripur.

Meanwhile, folk singer Rabi Kalita Begum kept the audience spellbound by singing a few numbers of Goalpararia Lokageet.

The function was attended by a large number of renowned persolities of the State. Homage was paid to the late singer by the gathering.
