Probe into release of molestation accused: ATASU

GUWAHATI, April 27: The All Tai Ahom Students' Union (ATASU) has demanded a high-level inquiry into the Rangiya GRP releasing one Arjunlal Saini against whom a case (9/16) under section 454(A) was registered on the night of April 13, 2016 on the charge of molesting three girl students of Cheppa Vivekanda Kendriya Vidyalaya of Aruchal Pradesh on onboard Guwahati-harlagun Intercity Express when the train between Kamakhya and Rangiya station. The girls, who were on an education excursion, were on their way back home.

According to the ATASU, the incident happened around 11 at night. "When the girls raised a hue and cry, some passengers, including ATASU's Kamrup district president Benudhar Gogoi and secretary Basanta Gogoi, caught Saini and handed him over to Rangiya GRP. However, the man was released on that very day by the police for reasons best known to them."

The ATASU says that there have been an age-old relations between Assam and Aruchal Pradesh. "However, such incidents, often involving people from outside Assam, do strain the relationship between the two sister States. We, therefore, want a high-level inquiry to ascertain as to why the accused has been released and the case is not being followed," the student body said.
