Prof. Utsa Patik to deliver 12th Brajmohan Sarma Memorial lecture

GUWAHATI, Sept 22: Renowned academic, Professor Emeritus of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Utsa Patik will deliver the 12th Brajamohan Sarma Memorial Annual Lecture on “The State and the Indian Peasantry: History and the Present” at Sudmersen Hall, Cotton College on September 25.

Patik taught Economics at the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning in JNU till her retirement in 2010.

The Brajamohan Sarma Memorial Trust, Guwahati organizes such lecture every year in the memory of late Brajamohan Sarma, former advocate of Guwahati High Court and a flag bearer of the weaker sections of the society, to build up public awareness and mobilize public opinion on contemporary issues concerning the citizen in general and the downtrodden of the society in particular.

The Trust has been organizing the annual event since his demise in 2004. This would be the 12th such lecture.

While Dr. Prabhat Patik of Jawaharlal Nehru University delivered the first lecture in the series in 2005 on the topic – “The Judiciary and the Empowerment of the people”; the lecture series saw many illumited mes like Sitaram Yechury, Jayati Ghosh, Malini Bhattacharjee, Brinda Karat, Siddhartha Varadarajan, Manoranjan Mohanty, Justice (Retd) D N Chowdhury, Padmashree Patricia Mukhim and Dr Hiren Gohain delivering valuable lectures on wide-ranging topics.
