Project Majuli as heritage district: AXX

GUWAHATI, Sept 9: Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) president Dr. Dhrubajyoti Bora hailed the declaration of Majuli as the 35th district in State and the first island district in the country by Dispur on September 8. The AXX, however, wants that Majuli should be projected as a Heritage district.

AXX hopes that the declaration made by Dispur will prove to be a fruitful step in getting Majuli declared as a world heritage site. The AXX president also appealed to Dispur to take measures that are in sync with the environment and heritage of Majuli. He appealed to the government to form a heritage committee comprising tiol and intertiol experts and sculptors so as to get the purpose of getting Majuli declared as the world heritage site served. “Everything – settlement of people, development of towns, roads and infrastructure in Majuli – should be done with a special plan,” the AXX president said, and added: “Dispur should also encourage people to construct houses that can give shelter to tourists. This apart, the folk culture in the culturally rich river island has to be preserved and developed by the State government.”
