GUWAHATI, Aug 21: Over 100 students of Gauhati University on Monday registered their protest against the steep hike in admission fees of third semester by many departments of the university.
Called by AASU’s GU unit, the students gathered in front of the office of the Vice Chancellor and staged the protest. In a statement issued on Monday, the GU unit of the AASU said: “Admission fees have hiked by Rs 2,000-3,000 more than what they were last year. This apart, the admission notice was issued on August 16, 2017 and fixed August 22, 2017 as the last date of admission, a period that has two holidays – Saturday and Sunday. The students are irked at the notification for their admission at such a short time, that too, at hiked rates of fees.”
Addressing the students gathered there, AASU’s central committee executive member Jardan Goswami said: “The steep hike in admission fees at a time when the State has been reeling under floods and erosion is an anti-people decision.”
GU AASU unit’s general secretary Mriganko Garg informed the media through a press statement that GU Registrar Dr. Suresh th and Deputy Secretary Dr. Arijit Bora came to the scene and let the agitated students know that admission into third semester in GU was kept in abeyance till the issue of hike in students’ admission fees is settled.
