Race for post of State BJP president on

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, April 18: The BJP in Assam has been busy with the formation of the government at Dispur and reorganization of the Assam Pradesh Committee of the party. If the party has Sarbanda Sonowal as the only projected candidate for the post of the Chief Minister, the party has been on the lookout for a leader to head its State committee as the president.

With a view to chalking out a clear-cut strategy on the two agenda, the party high command has called all top leaders of the party to Delhi. The two issues snowballed into big ones as the party is going to strictly adhere to the one-man-one-post formula.

In the event of Sonowal becoming the Chief Minister as planned by the party, the post of the State president of the party will lie vacant. Since the formation of the government and reorganization of the party committee in the State are inter-connected and almost simultaneous the party high command feels it necessary to draw a well thought-out plan to make things go smoothly.

Though there is no question of any race among the leaders of the party for the post of the Chief Minister, there is a race for the post of State president of the party. It is quite obvious that there will be a rat race for plum portfolios in the State Cabinet to be formed by Sonowal in the event of the party forming its government at Dispur.

Some of the mes that have figured as probable candidates for the post of president of the State committee of the party are Jadav Deka, Ramen Deka, Kamakhya Prasad Tasha and Rajdweep Roy.

Jadav Deka has a sacrifice to his credit that he proved his loyalty to the party by not fighting the recently-held Assembly election in the State as an independent candidate or joining any other party when he was denied ticket by the party so as to accommodate AGP candidate Satyabrata Kalita from Kamalpur constituency.

In the event of Sonowal becoming the Chief Minister, someone from the party in Assam has to be inducted into the Cabinet of Prime Minister rendra Modi. If Ramen Deka becomes a minister in the Union Cabinet, he cannot be in the race for the post of president of the State committee of the party.

The situation for Tasha looks no different from that of Ramen Deka.

In so far as chances of Rajdweep Roy are concerned, so far no tiol political party has made anyone from Silchar its State president.

Meanwhile, Sonowal has already had a meeting with Prime Minister rendra Modi, party sources said. He has briefed the Prime Minister on the political situation in Assam during the Assembly election and in the post-election period. They have also had a detailed discussion on the formation of BJP government at Dispur and reorganization of the party setup in the State with the change in the post of the State president of the party, the sources added.

However, everything will remain hazy till May 19 when the Election Commission of India will declare the results of the Assembly election in the State.

Most of Assam BJP top leaders have been camping in New Delhi following a call from the party high command.
