Reconsider decision to hike VAT: AIUDF tells BJP

GUWAHATI, July 6: The AIUDF has appealed to the BJP-led government at Dispur to reconsider its decision to hike VAT by one per cent as the step is set to affect the poor and lower middle class in the State badly. In a statement issued to the press today, AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal said: “The State Government should reconsider and rollback its decision to hike taxes on essential commodities. Such a decision of the government will affect the poor and lower middle class people in the State. Prime Minister rendra Modi spoke of ‘acche din’ and Assam Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal spoke of change before the last elections. However, they are now out to burden the consumers with excessive taxes. The government is now working for the rich, not for the poor.”
