Remission of sentences to prisoners

GUWAHATI, January 23: In commemoration of the Republic Day, the Assam Government has decided to remit the sentences against certain categories of prisoners who have been convicted by the courts (other than court martial) having origil jurisdiction in Assam and sentenced to rigorous imprisonment.

The State government have decided to grant the remission of sentences for the period to the different categories of the prisoners lodged in the jails of Assam and outside other than those in respect of whom the sentence is inflicted for an offence against the order referred to in Sub–section 6 of the Section 432 of the Code of Crimiral Procedure, 1973(Act. No. 2 of 1974 here–in–after referred to as the said code).

The scale of remission for prisoners with sentence above one year is 30 days; for prisoners with sentence above six months up to 1 year is 15 days; for prisoners with sentence above three months up to six months is 10 days, for prisoners with sentence above one month up to three months is 5 days.

However, the remission granted shall not be admissible to a certain categories of prisoners. This remission order will take effect from January 26, 2015.
