Repair roads in Lakhimpur, Dhemaji: Governor

GUWAHATI, July 17: Taking a stern view of the worsening road condition of Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts and also parts of Darrang district, Assam Governor Banwarilal Purohit asked PWD (Roads) to repair the roads in these districts.

Concluding his two-day visit to the flood-affected Lakhimpur and Dhemaji districts on Sunday, and also his visit to Mangaldoi on July 10 Purohit convened a meeting of the PWD at Raj Bhavan on Monday and sent an immediate message to the department to repair the roads on a war footing and bring an end to the ordeal of the people of these districts. In the meeting the Governor was apprised that current wave of floods in these two districts besides severely damaging parts of the roads have also dented the top surface of the roads making them unfit for smooth riding.

Governor Purohit asked Commissioner PWD(R) to take immediate steps to prepare estimates, sanction the work and float tenders for repairing the roads at the earliest. He also asked the department not to compromise with the quality of the works and maintain highest standard to lend durability to the roads. In view of the road conditions the Governor also asked the PWD (R) to take the help of Central Road Research Institute for construction of better roads.

Commissioner and Special Secretary, PWD (Building and Highways) Paramanda Das said that all the paper works, tendering process have been completed and they shall start the work soon after the rainy season is over, maybe in the month of September this year.  He also said that regular inspections are also being carried out by the department. The Governor also assured the officials with all support and cooperation from the centre. He said that he would talk to the Union Minister of Roads and Transport if required.
