Rural poll: SEC waiting for Dispur nod

GUWAHATI, Dec 17: A clear-cut decision on announcement of panchayat poll schedule in the State seems to be in a stand-off – while the State Election Commission (SEC) is waiting for the go-ahead sigl from Dispur the latter is in a wait-and-watch mode on the would be situation in the State after the publication of the part draft of the NRC. Part of the draft NRC will be published after midnight of December 31, 2017.

As things go as of now, the SEC is ready to hold panchayat poll soon after getting the nod from Dispur that has the burden of providing security during the electioneering. The SEC has already made it known that it is going to complete the panchayat poll process by February 15, 2017.

However, Dispur is in a dilemma on holding panchayat poll. It has inputs that a section is out to create scenes in the State after the publication of part of the draft NRC. With such an apprehension, as many as 50 companies of central security forces have been stationed in Assam.
