Scholarship of Dr Sarma lauded

GUWAHATI, Nov 29: Dr. Amalendu Chakravarty, Head of the Department of Bengali, Gauhati University has said that Dr. Satyendrath Sarma had profound knowledge in Bengali, Sanskrit and English, besides Assamese.

Dr. Chakravarty said this while speaking at a semir on ‘Dr. Satyendrath Sarma: Praj and Sadha’ at Gauhati University today. The semir was organized on the occasion of the birth centery of Dr. Sarma. Dr. Chakravarty said that because of his profound knowledge and contribution, while the Axam Xahitya Xabha (AXX) had conferred the Xahityacharya award on Dr. Sarma for his research on literature, the State Government conferred the Sankardeva Award on him. The main speaker of the semir, former HOD of Assamese department in GU Dr. Sailen Bharali, was a student of Dr. Sarma. He said that Dr. Sarma was a simple person. He did research on many a subject, including the Ramaya. “He wrote a critic on the Ramaya,” Dr. Bharali said.

The semir was conducted by HOD of Assamese Department of the university, Dr. Tarani Deka.
