SEC ready for panchayat poll

GUWAHATI, Oct 15: Assam State Election Commission (SEC) is all set to hold the panchayat poll in the State in 2018. According to sources, effort is on to hold the election before the next Magh Bihu. The SEC has started reviewing prelimiry preparations for the poll on the ground.

Senior SEC officials have been visiting various districts in the State to review preparations for panchayat poll in the State, an elephantine task for the SEC as the State has 2202 gaon panchayats in the State. Panchayat poll is the biggest election in the State since various people’s representatives like ZPC members, anchalik panchayat (AP) members, gaon panchayat presidents and panchayat members numbering ten in each of the 2202 gaon panchayats in the State are elected in this election that is set to be a four or five-phase affair. Secret ballots will be used in the panchayat poll.

Meanwhile, SEC is also reviewing the electoral rolls of the State. While the draft electoral roll will be made public on October 16, 2017 the fil photo electoral roll will be published on January 12, 2018.
