Section 144 imposed around Deepor Beel

Guwahati, Dec 29: To prevent unruly picnickers from creating a ruckus and polluting the Deepor Beel, the Guwahati city police administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the CrPC in the area around the water body with effect from January 1, 2017.

The DCP of West police district, Guwhati, Mridulanda Sarma, has imposed the restriction prohibiting assembly of more than five persons in and around Deepor Beel.  

Earlier open Tuesday, Kamrup district administration had imposed similar restrictions in and around Deepor Beel.

Playing loud music, consumption of alcohol, entering the wildlife sanctuary and reserved forest areas without permission and fishing, boating and swimming in water bodies in these areas have been prohibited.

The administration had also asked the forest department to put up signboards marking the picnic spots. The prohibitions will remain in place for an indefinite period of time.

“The administration has issued several guidelines to regulate the movement of picnickers around the wildlife sanctuaries of the Metro district. We want to check the destruction of flora and fau and degradation of the ecosystem,” Deputy Commissioner M Angamuthu had said.

“Violation of discipline in and around the sanctuary will be taken seriously. We will encourage villagers to monitor the situation; it will be a community initiative,” Angamuthu had said.
