Slim Cabinet behind slow implementation of scheme, feel public

GUWAHATI, Sept 2: Prime Minister rendra Modi is going to shuffle his Cabinet on Sunday with his eyes set on the Lok Sabha polls slated for 2019. When will Assam Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal go for such an exercise? This is an opt-repeated question doing rounds among the people of the State and legislators of the three coalition partners in the State as well.
The slim Cabinet of Sarbanda Sonowal has already completed 16 months. The general public and the members of each of the three political parties forming the government at Dispur want to blame it on the slim Cabinet Sonowal heads as the reason behind slow implementation of development schemes in the State.
The much-talked-about Cabinet expansion continues to elude the State even after Sonowal going to hold talks with the party high command towards that end several times. Even State BJP president Ranjit Kumar Dass was on record telling the media that the State Cabinet would be expanded within August. However, the Cabinet expansion keeps eluding the State.
Though the members of the three ruling parties do not utter anything openly on the delay in Cabinet expansion, they are a worried lot as the public talk much on the poor pace of scheme implementation in the State.
Talking to reporters on Saturday, AGP MLA Ramendra rayan Kalita said: “Cabinet expansion is one of the constitutiol responsibilities of the Chief Minister. Who he’ll induct in his Cabinet is his prerogative. However, going with a slim Cabinet for such a long time isn’t justified. I feel that a full-fledged Cabinet can add speed to government works in the State.”
With the monsoon session of the State Assembly being held from September 4 to 12, the opportune time for Cabinet expansion is between September 13 and Durga Puja-eve. If the Chief Minister misses thus bus too, the Cabinet expansion is likely to be delayed further.
As many as eight Cabinet berths are still to be filled up in Sonowal’s Ministry.
