GUWAHATI, August 16: Assam observed State Mourning Day in memory of the Dhemaji blast victims killed in a bomb explosion triggered by extremists at an Independence Day function on August 15, 2004. At a centrally-held function at the Assam Secretariat, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi administered the pledge to the officials and employees on the occasion. Denouncing all types of violence, Chief Minister Gogoi said, “We deeply mourn the senseless killing of innocent people, including children, by militants at Dhemaji on Independence Day. The State Government has decided to condemn the incident in its own way by observing the State Mourning Day every year on this day and create awareness against all sorts of violence in society. We all pledge to unitedly fight against the orgy of violence to pave the way for a society free from bloodshed and conflict.”

Later, the Chief Minister also offered floral tributes in the memory of those killed in the blast.
