State to construct 9,500 km PMGSY roads

GUWAHATI, Sept 7: Assam government will construct 9,500 km rural roads in the State under Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yoja (PMGSY) scheme and the state Public Works Department (PWD) has already submitted detailed project report (DPR) to the Central government in this regard.

State PWD minister Parimal Suklabaidya informed this in the Assam Assembly on Thursday.

Central government has allowed construction of roads under PMGSY in those where minimum habitation is 250.

The PWD minister said this when Congress legislator Serman Ali Ahmed drew the attention of the minister in the House regarding construction of roads under PMGSY.

During the previous Congress government a total of 7000 km roads were constructed in the State under the scheme. Suklabaidya said that there are certain hiccups in the construction of roads in the State under the scheme.

“As Assam is a flood-prone State, the state demands high road in rural areas but the construction of such road is not possible under the scheme as PMGSY norms do not allow this. We have, however, taken up the matter with the Central Government if the norms can be relaxed in Assam. We will pursue the matter with the Centre again,” he said.
