Students accuse GMC officials of taking bribe

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 2: The Central Guwahati Students’ Union (CGSU) has alleged that a section of officials in Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) in the city is involved in taking from Rs 15,000 to 20,000 as bribe from per family for giving them water supply connection. The students’ body has also said that the civic body is a total failure in supplying potable water to the city denizens.

In a statement issued to the press today, CGSU general secretary Sukumar Barman said: “The GMC has miserably failed to supply drinking water to the residents of the city. However, of late, a section of officials of the civic body has been giving water supply connections to some families by charging Rs 15,000 to Rs 2,000 per family as bribes. We’ve moved the executive engineer of the civic body’s water supply section, Anil Krisha Mishra, seeking action against the erring officials. However, no action has been taken against the officials as yet. This smacks of his involvement in the clandestine water supply connection. We demand of the authorities concerned to conduct an inquiry into the illegality and ensure regular water supply in the city.”
