GUWAHATI, July 13: Guwahati is expanding fast, both in size and population. However, roads and other infrastructure in the city lag far behind. There has been a serious mismatch between the expansion and development of the city, leading to serious problems for its citizens. There are many roads in the city that have been lying uttended for a long time, and one such road is the Hatigaon-Sijubari main road.
The Hatigaon-Sijubari road is being used by thousands of people, including office-goers, students and others, daily. According to Dispur Students’ Union (DSU) that has brought the plight of the road to the State PWD today, the road has been lying without any renovation or reconstruction for the past ten years. The draige system on either side of the road is no better either. When there is a spell of rain, the chocked drains overflow and inundate the road as it is seen elsewhere in the city.
Taking the pathetic plight of the road into account, All Guwahati Students’ Union (AGSU) general secretary Raifuddin Ahmed, Dispur Students’ Union (DSU) adviser Abdul Hasan, president Manoj Das and general secretary Ranjit Deka and other members moved to the PWD chief engineer (Road), Syed Mahanmmed Barik, and handed him over a memorandum demanding immediate reconstruction of the road.
According to the students’ union, the chief engineer assured it of reconstructing the road immediately.
DSU president Manoj Das and general Ranjit Deka cautioned in a press statement that they would resort to a democratic agitation if the road is not reconstructed immediately.
