Students on tenterhooks following GU flip-flop!

By our Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, July 28: Uncertainty continues to haunt students of Assam colleges affiliated under Gauhati University who are seeking admission into traditiol courses in the university. Such a situation has arisen due to a flip-flop on the part of the premier university of the region. The students seeking admission into the university have been on tenterhooks.

The system prevalent in the university over the years was very simple – there was no admission test for students of colleges affiliated under GU as they should get admission on the basis of merit. However, students from other universities had to face entrance test. This practice was followed in accordance with the notification issued by the university in 2007.

However, all of a sudden the university introduced the system of admission test for students of all universities this year. While introducing this system, the University authorities did not even amend the notification it had issued in 2007.

This led four students seeking admission into the university move the Gauhati High Court with a petition. In its order issued on July 14, 2017 the High Court stayed the entrance test for students from colleges under GU affiliation. The High Court, however, gave the university the liberty to start admission without holding admission test, it if wants.

The order of the Gauhati High Court was followed by a notification issued the university authority that it would not hold admission test for students from GU affiliated this year. However, all of a sudden, the university moved the High Court with a review petition. The hearing of the petition is pending, so is the future of students seeking admission into the university.
