Suicide by farmer exposes Dispur's failure: Ajmal

GUWAHATI, July 24: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) came down heavily on the government as it botched in taking stringent measures to curb the abysmal flood situation of Assam.

The party has alleged that over 70 persons lost their lives due to floods across the State. Besides, the suicide committed by a farmer of Morigaon, Kushal th, at a relief camp speaks volumes on the situation of flood crises, AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal said in a statement issued to the press on Monday.

Ajmal said: “The death of the farmer at the relief camp clearly depicts the dud of the Sarbanda Sonowal-led government in tackling the tural disaster. Those affected are still deprived of support and help from the government.”

Ajmal also castigated State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma alleging that though the State Health Department had announced several health schemes for the poor, they were yet to reach the target beneficiaries.

“The farmer was suffering ill health for a long time. But, he could not avail any health benefits from the health department. That’s the reason why he chose this path to end his life,” said Ajmal.

Ajmal demanded a high-level inquiry into the farmer’s death and the reason why he could not avail the benefits of the government’s schemes.

The CAG audit report too highlighted the failure of the State government, particularly in health and education, he added, saying that the report had highlighted non-implementation of flood fighting schemes due to non-release of funds on time by the Centre.
