GUWAHATI, April 9: In a city where traffic rule violation is a regular phenomenon, spells of sustained drive by the Transport (Enforcement ) Department against offenders has led to booking of over 5,405 cases in the city  in the 2014-15 fincial year.

The DTO (Enforcement) of Kamrup (Metro) realised a whopping fine amount of Rs. 1,84,18,810.00  from the violators under various cases during this period. The DTO (Enforcement ) authorities collected Rs 1,69,75,237.00 as fine from the traffic rule violators in 2013-14 fincial year.  This here the DTO has collected Rs 14,43,573.00 more compared to last year.

Munin Das, DTO (Enforcement) of Kamrup (Metro), said that collecting fine from the traffic rule violators is not the sole aim of the Transport Department.

“Rather our concern is the safety of the people. We have given importance on obeying traffic rules so that no vehicle can carry excessive passengers by violating traffic norms, so that the truck can’t carry more load than permitted,” Das said.  He also said that to ensure safety of the passengers as well as of the pedestrians, the Transport Department in collaboration with police and district administration has launched awareness drive  regarding obeying traffic rules while driving.

“We have also launched operations against tinted-glass vehicles in the city as per Supreme Court ruling,” he said.

As many as 2730 cases have been settled on the spot during this operation, added Das.
