GUWAHATI, Nov 3: The Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Assam today warned Fince and Health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his comment in favor of granting citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis.

Backing the Centre’s move to grant citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis, Minister Sarma on Tuesday had made a very controversial statement.

He had said that granting citizenship to Bangladeshi Hindus will only help save the Hindus from becoming a minority in Assam.

“Such a statement is not expected from an Education minister. Everyone has a right to speak at the interest of the tiolity. Nobody has made him the guardian of Assamese tiolity to think about its future,” Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad, Assam president Dileep Gogoi said here today in a press conference.

He said that such commul statement of Sarma will affect the age-old unity of the people of Assam. Gogoi further said that nobody has given him the contract to bring Bangladeshis to rehabilate in Assam.

He said that Sarma is lying again and again for his political interest.

Taking a dig at the BJP government, Gogoi said, “Chief Minister Sarbanda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma on the one hand talk about protecting jati, mati, bheti (ethnicity, land and resources) and on the other hand back granting citizenship to Hindu Bangladeshis. Such double standard of the BJP government will definitely pose threat to the future of Assam.”

The Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad also warned the BJP not to go ahead with the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
